Empowering Future Aspirations: GirlsGrow’s First Workshop in Kolkata
In our continued mission to shape tomorrow’s bright minds, we travelled to Kolkata for a workshop we held at Calcutta Armed police (C.A.P) Primary School. This time around, the focus was on sparking curiosity about the basics of computer skills for children as young as six years old. As we were greeted by a lively group of around 80 kids who were eager to discover a new world through technology, the day turned out to be as much of a learning experience for us as it was for the children.
What set this workshop apart from our usual sessions was its essence of simplicity and accessibility. We centred our attention on introducing the kids to basic computer skills, helping to establish a strong affinity towards technology while familiarising them with computational tools from a young age. The energy was contagious as the children dived into the session with open minds, curiosity, and a sense of wonder.
Among the many enthusiastic faces was a particularly proactive Class 1 girl whose drive and knowledge about computers left a lasting impression on us. At just six years old, she was already familiar with how computers are used in government offices and had an impressive grasp on their utility in daily life. What made her stand out even more was her strong ambition: she shared that she dreams of becoming an IAS officer—a career choice inspired by her understanding of government work and her aspiration to create positive change. Her mother, who was there to witness her daughter’s journey, looked on with pride as we engaged in conversation with her and other parents toward the end of the session.
This workshop was a wonderful blend of youthful curiosity and parental involvement. For us, it was an opportunity to bridge the gap between basic digital literacy and future aspirations, helping parents understand the value of early computer skills while encouraging children to explore this new realm. The children’s eagerness to participate, combined with the support of their parents, reaffirmed the importance of nurturing tech skills from an early age.
We at GirlsGrow remain committed to offering workshops that empower children to explore technology on their terms, planting seeds of knowledge that will grow alongside their ambitions. With more workshops in the pipeline, we are excited to continue inspiring future leaders, one classroom at a time.
