Empowering Futures: Breaking Barriers in Tech for Young Girls
On a mission to get more girls into Tech! One workshop at a time.
We recently organized a workshop targeting young girls, held within a community setting to appeal to a diverse range of age groups. The purpose was to introduce them to the tech industry, as many of these girls only had a basic understanding derived from their parents' professions. Primarily exposed to their fathers working in roles within the tech sector, these girls perceived it as a predominantly male-driven field.
To address this perception, we structured the workshop to be highly interactive, creating a collaborative environment where we could gauge their perspectives and current understanding of the industry. The energy and enthusiasm displayed by these young girls, who had limited exposure to the tech world beyond their parents' careers, were noteworthy.
The workshop incorporated crowd-work elements to allow the girls to share their viewpoints before introducing them to the exciting career opportunities and other perks within the tech sector. The girls actively participated in quizzes designed for them, showcasing their ability to answer questions with minimal assistance. This highlighted their potential and awareness of ongoing technological advancements.
However, it was disheartening to observe that while these young girls were cognizant of the monetary benefits associated with the industry, their knowledge beyond financial aspects was limited. This revelation underscored the need to extend our outreach to this specific segment of society. Our goal is to assist more girls in comprehending the future prospects within the software development industry and unravel the diverse opportunities that this dynamic field has to offer.
